I VINI D'ITALIA 2009 L'ESPRESSO: 18/20 - 5 BOTTLES

VINI D'ITALIA 2010 GAMBERO ROSSO: 2 RED GLASSES

Description:

The vineyards have been managed following the methods of organic farming (IMC Control and Certificate, Amab Organic Guarantee) since 1995. Special attention is given to soil through the growing of pluriannual grass meadows which are composed of different herb species.
Not being affected by the mitigating influence of the Adriatic Sea, the region is characterized by a cold, dry microclimate with high temperature ranges, ideal for the growing of Verdicchio di Matelica, which has been grown in this district since ancient times and here ripens late from the second half of October. The vineyards are managed following the methods of organic farming. No malo-lactic fermentation keeps this wine fresh and bright, with fine acid and structure. A pale yellow wine with greenish tones and a delicate scent of country herbs and apple, its taste has a fresh sour trace which makes this wine particularly fragrant and food friendly.

Producer’s details:The COLLESTEFANO vine-growing and wine-producing farm is situated in a hilly belt in the hinterland of the Marches, 420 m above sea-level, in the distribution area of Verdicchio di Matelica DOC wine. This narrow tableland which stretches from the south to the north is watered by the Esino river and bounded on the east and on the west by the mountain range of the Appennini Umbro-Marchigiani (1479 m above sea-level). Not being affected by the mitigating influence of the Adriatic Sea, the region is characterized by a cold, dry microclimate with high temperature ranges which is ideal for the growing of Verdicchio di Matelica, an autochtonal species of vine with white grapes that has been grown in this district since ancient times and here ripens late from the second half of October. The owner is the descendant of a farmers' family; after secondary school he matriculated at the faculty of Agriculture where he graduated with a thesis on the most interesting crops of the area, Verdicchio di Matelica. Afterwards, being interested in low environmental impact production techniques, he had some training experiences in German vine-growing and wine-producing farms, such as Weingut Salwey am Kaiserstuhl, and particularly Weingut Zähringer-ecovin in Heitersheim, where he could study in depth with Paulin Köpfer the production techniques carried out following the methods of organic farming. He also worked for some time in wine shops and restaurants (Weinladen Schmidt, Berlin - Restaurant Tropeano, Hannover) and then, with great enthusiasm and motivation, in 1998 he set up this small business on his parents' farm. It is a small farm, where the owner works personally with his family taking care of everything: vineyards, cellar and wine marketing. Their 3.5 hectares of vineyards produce about 25,000 bottles of Verdicchio di Matelica DOC, which is obtained using grapes from organic cultivation.
